Artist’s Statement
I am fascinated by line … mesmerized by shape …
captivated by texture … thrilled by color … enthralled by light
and shadow. I love the sound of the mark moving across the surface
of the paper, and the tingle of the vision as it travels from my
eyes into my hands.
When I put marks on paper, I create an illusion
– explorations in form, line, value and color I draw.
The Artifacts are small color studies, objects
and bric-a-brac chosen for their form and color (or lack of it)
and the way that light and shadow plays across them.
The Fragments began as larger pieces. Cut down
and taken out of context, they became studies in color, shape and
texture.
And then there are the figure drawings … I am
awed by the contours of the human form and the way that light and
shadow play upon the shapes. I love the suggestion of attitude
inherent in the observation of any human being. And my intentions
are evocative rather than provocative.
A mentor once told me that all artwork is
self-study. The artwork I create is a way of recognizing who and
what I am without the warp of emotions, relationships and
circumstances that often distort my point of view. As Nietzsche
said, “We have art so that we will not die of reality”.
